Jailhouse Of County Fife

The Elders

In the jailhouse of County Fife all good men did time
For celebratin' good and bad with fists and a bottle of wine
Then in the cellblock late one night a rumor passed our way
Of a blanket and a rifle and three square meals a day

Now in the winter we set sail from troubles and from pain
The new world came up on the bow somewhere the coast in Maine
They signed us up right then and there every man and boy
And took us down to Washington the place of our employ

We was off to fight that Johnny Reb in the name of Uncle Sam
We'll chase 'em down with cannon balls
'Til we reach the promised land
We’re the Union men of County Fife
We'll fight to the very last man

We rolled right through Antietam the fightin' hand to hand
We made it all through Gettysburg and we hardly lost a man
They paid us off in whiskey the one thing we could spend
Those greenback Union dollars we had nowhere to send

We was off to fight that Johnny Reb in the name of Uncle Sam
We'll chase 'em down with cannon balls
'Til we reach the promised land
We’re the Union men of County Fife
We'll fight to the very last man
When we marched into Atlanta we knew it was meant to be
We all knew General Sherman was marchin' to the sea
Now some say they had it comin' some say we was blind
But we left everything that crossed our path
For the widows that they left behind

We was off to fight that Johnny Reb in the name of Uncle Sam
We'll chase 'em down with cannon balls
'Til we reach the promised land
We’re the Union men of County Fife
We'll fight to the very last man
