Took Her Home

Fred Stobaugh

I sit alone
and I miss her face
these evenings move at
the lowest pace

I pray to God that he keeps her still
the way He kept me strong
through the edges she was ill

And I'm no sinner
and I'm no saint
but I know that someday
that this body just ain't gonna
stick around and I'm not gonna lie
but I look for the day
I can stand by her side

so you can't imagine the grief inside
when you lay them to rest
and you say your goodbye
but I don't blame God when I cry

He didn't take her away
He just took her home
I see her empty chair
but that don't mean
I'm alone
no he's keeping her safe
and He's keeping her warm
'til I show up and call heaven my own

He didn't take her away
He just took her home
He just took her home
He just took her home
He just took her home

Back in 1938
at a root been stand
they had their first date
and it's kinda crazy but
they knew right then that
They'd be together
'til the very end

And two years later
with tears in her eyes
she's holding his hands
and his calling her bride
and looking back
at the years in between
He said, it sure came together
like a perfect dream

So you can't imagine the grief inside
when you lay them to rest
and you say your goodbye
but I don't blame God when I cry
no I don't blame God when I cry

Cause he didn't take her away
He just took her home
I see her empty chair
but that don't mean
I'm alone
no he's keeping her safe
and He's keeping her warm
'til I show up and call heaven my own

He didn't take her away
He just took her home
He just took her home
He just took her home
He just took her home
