He had 'bout twenty pounds on me
Went by fast as lightnin'
A bus stop brawl at the end of the street
Was my first taste of fightin'

I didn't know then what I know now
We both lost that day somehow

He was a tough kid
Boy, them edges were rough, kid
Chip on his shoulder with a fuse lit
This kid
Wasn't the only one he left
With a split lip
Life ain't fair when cards get dealt
Heard his old man man made his life hell
I wonder what growin' up did
I hope the rest of your years
Have been a little less tough, kid

I remember how the small town rumors
Flew around 'bout few years later
What goes on behind closed doors
Ain't always in the paper

In a different world we could have been friends
I still talk about you every now and then

He was a tough kid
Boy, them edges were rough, kid
Chip on his shoulder with a fuse lit
This kid
Wasn't the only one he left
With a split lip
Tough kid

With a split lip
Life ain't fair when cards get dealt
Heard his old man man made his life hell

I hope the rest of your years
Have been a little less tough, kid

Yeah, he was a tough kid
